  • We had an particularly warm day today; it was only 20 degrees...
Alaska is a funny place...I think its so weird how so many people are from other parts of the country and yet we all ended up in Alaska where when it gets to -40 you need to be bundled up but not so much that you sweat because it'll freeze to your skin and you'll get frostbite (or so the true Alaskans tell me). Anyway it's pretty weird when you think about it...Alaska is like this temporary place for most of us, we're just here because we can't be there. On the art front I have to say I'm a little frustrated...Before I came up here I had visions of my many photo trips around the wilderness, but as I came here the reality of not just how cold it actually is, but the fact that I doubt it's smart to bring out a camera when it's like -5, set in. Anyway I'll figure it out one of these days...
I guess I don't really have much else to write about...I do miss L.A. but in a bittersweet way I guess. I still remember all the reasons why I felt like I had to get away but sometimes I'll wake up and think I'll look out my window and see the sun and instead it's a mini-blizzard. The worst is after school because as I walk out I expect to have options like movies, venice arts, the beach and yet there is none of that up here. At the same time I think that I'm getting used to the slow pace of life up here and I'll be so freaked when I return to L.A. by all the activity that I might miss Alaska some. I can't really decide how I feel about it right now...The only way I can describe it is like medicine. You know it makes you feel better and it's good for you but you kinda wish you weren't sick in the first place so you didn't have to take it.

Find the light inside...it's everywhere. Details of things and close ups. Challenge yourself with the little things that you see in your environment everyday and find a new way to view it with your camera.

I know you won't appreciate this, now that you are an Alaskan, but I am bundled in sweats, wool coat, hat, and socks because, after all, its 50 degrees outside.

Bittersweet...yes, much of life is like that. The beauty of your going to a different place, and one so different from what you know, is that you get to ask these questions that might not otherwise even occur to you. Perhaps that slow pace, ability to create space around you to reflect, is exactly the medicine you needed.

Don't forget In-N-Out Burger! Whenever I travel, I miss the experience of sinking my teeth into a freshly made Double-Double with extra grilled onions.
