  • I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before but it's a strange feeling when you can almost feel yourself getting older. Not physically but mentally. It's a bizarre combination of resurfacing memories and new experiences that flood your brain and make you realize that time is passing all too quickly.
You stand dead center in a fixed spot, because it becomes uncomfortable to look back and you refuse to look forward. So you focus on this very moment until you realize you have been duped my friend, for that moment is no longer a moment, it has become your past and in the confusion you are now inhabiting the future.
But that is the necessity of growing up, or more accurately, growing in. Because you either gain a greater understanding of yourself (or you think you do) or you come to terms with those mystical things in life that you will never fully grasp.
P.S. Yes I know, a bit introspective. Alaska Update: The snow is still here...don't think I've seen the ground since October but all is well. If not for the extreme weather I would really feel tempted to stay in Alaska...I think I'm particularly well suited to be here.

Wow, every time I read your entries I am amazed by your ability to be so deep and so funny at the same time. "You have been duped my friend, this moment is no longer a moment", so great!

"Growing up, or more accurately, growing in." That is a beautiful way to frame what you will discover is a life-long experience, Alex, which will only become deeper and more layered as you grow older. As will the paradox of gaining experience, while also coming to terms with those things that you will never fully grasp. This piece reminds me of what my parents (and their parents and, I am sure, their parents before them, and on and on) said when they hit my age (gasp!): As I grow older I grow both in wisdom and in ignorance; my understanding of life deepens, yet – around those essential life questions – I still really know nothing.

This is a really powerful entry, Alex. I often find myself standing dead center in that fixed spot at age 29. It's chilly here in Venice. Lots of rain, if you can believe that. We miss you. Hugs to you.
