  • The devastated earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 at 4:53 p.m. broke my heart into a million pieces as I heard that around 3 million people were in need. As I watch a program tonight dedicated to donate money to the people of Haiti, I see how people realize that life is so precious and at any moment anything can happen that can kill, destroy, and hurt the lives of many. As many celebrities are participating in this show tonight (Hope for Haiti now) they tell many stories and even they recognize that life isn’t always fair for everyone and that money and fame definitely won’t save them from death. As I’ve also heard tonight, children in Haiti would usually go to school in the afternoons, and the day that it hit, most kids were at school learning and living their daily lives. When the earthquake happened, it’s sad to say that many children were crushed under buildings, died, and were severely hurt. They showed pictures and videos of many children and people suffering, but also people not giving up; as one reporter said, “When people were rescued, they would come up singing that they hadn’t given up and still had hope that after a few days of being underground with the pressure of concrete on them, someone would help them. I honestly wish this wouldn’t of happened to the people of Haiti because they didn’t deserve it at all, but life always turns on us and the only thing that Haiti can do now is pray and hope that this nightmare will finish and that they will restore their lives, loved ones, and their country and when they open their eyes, it will all be okay.

Evelyn, this is a really beautiful reflection on this tragedy. Thank you for posting it. There are some extraordinary images from Haiti posted on the LA Times.

There were two things that bothered me about last night's telethon: 1) That there were, likely, people donating only in the hopes that they might talk to a celebrity (don't get me started on my rant about our celebrity culture...); and 2) that Sanjay Gupta and Anderson Cooper, from CNN, were the dominant storytellers, rather than Haitian people. (I haven’t even seen any side-by-side reporting with Haitian journalists). Even when they invited Haitians on the air, the journalist took up most of the airspace. That disturbs me (although it is not unusual).

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to also have images and video shot by the people there -- a participant photo or video project like we do -- so that we could hear more intimate stories from those living the tragedy?
